"The SAGE Handbook of Public Opinion Research" (Edts.: Wolfgang Donsbach & Michael W. Traugott)
|
Public opinion theory and research are becoming increasingly significant in modern societies as people's attitudes and behaviours become ever more volatile and opinion poll data becomes ever more readily available. This major new Handbook is the first to bring together into one volume the whole field of public opinion theory, research methodology, and the political and social embeddedness of polls in modern societies. It comprehensively maps out the state-of-the-art in contemporary scholarship on these topics.
With over fifty chapters written by distinguished international researchers, both academic and from the commercial sector, this Handbook is designed to: give the reader an overview of the most important concepts included in and surrounding the term 'public opinion' and its application in modern social research; present the basic empirical concepts for assessing public opinion and opinion changes in society; provide an overview of the social, political and legal status of public opinion research, how it is perceived by the public and by journalists, and how it is used by governments; and, offer a review of the role and use of surveys for selected special fields of application, "The Handbook of Public Opinion Research" provides an indispensable resource for both practitioners and students alike.

"Wählerstimmungen in der
Mediendemokratie: Analysen auf der Basis des Bundestagswahlkampfs
2002" (Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann, Wolfgang Donsbach, Hans Mathias Kepplinger)
- "Voters' Sentiment in the Media-Democarcy: analysis on the basis
of the German general election campaign of 2002" |
|
The book presents the latest research
results on how the media influence the voters' sentiement and the
dynamic of shaping public opinion during election campaigns. Furthermore,
the book describes the signals of orientation the media offer to the
mostly undecided voters. The analysis focuses on the German genereal
election campaign of 2002, which was dominated even stronger by the
media representations than earlier election campaigns. Especially,
televion played an outstanding role. The campaign was characterized
by huge swings in the voters' sentiements.
For the second time, the "Institut für Demoskopie Allensbach",
the "Institut für Kommunikationswissenschaft" (Department of
Communication Sciences) at Dresden University and "Institut für
Publizistik" (Department of Journalism) at the University of Mainz
cooperated closely in order to scrutinize and understand the often
subtle prozesses of voting decisions in the Media-Democarcy by conducting
comprehensive content analyses and polls.
